Prochlorococcus contributes to new production in the Sargasso Sea deep chlorophyll maximum

چکیده
[1] Prochlorococcus is ubiquitous in tropical oceans, but its biogeochemical role is not well constrained. For example, cultured Prochlorococcus clones do not grow on NO3 !, but these cultured clones may only represent 10–15% of the natural population variance resulting in a biased biogeochemical role. We report NO3 !, NO2 !, NH4 + and urea uptake rates for flow-cytometrically sorted Sargasso Sea Prochlorococcus populations. Reduced nitrogen substrates accounted for most, 90–95%, of the measured nitrogen uptake, but these populations also directly assimilate a significant fraction of NO3 !, 5–10%; a finding in stark contrast to conclusions drawn from culture studies. The observed population-specific NO3 ! uptake rates compare favorably with both net Prochlorococcus population growth rates and diapycnal NO3 ! fluxes. We hypothesize that while reduced nitrogen supports overall high growth rates, balancing high grazing mortality, the net seasonal Prochlorococcus population growth is supported by NO3 !

The spring bloom in the northwestern Sargasso Sea: spatial extent and relationship with winter mixing
The interannual variability of the spatial extent of the spring bloom in the central Sargasso Sea was quantified by remote-sensing approaches. Proxy measurements employing satellite-derived sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll a concentrations were used to estimate the amount of new production derived from inorganic nitrate supplied by convective winter mixing. Nitrate supply and new product...
متن کاملAbundance of broad bacterial taxa in the sargasso sea explained by environmental conditions but not water mass.
To explore the potential linkage between distribution of marine bacterioplankton groups, environmental conditions, and water mass, we investigated the factors determining the abundance of bacterial taxa across the hydrographically complex Subtropical Convergence Zone in the Sargasso Sea. Based on information from 16S rRNA gene clone libraries from various locations and two depths, abundances of...
متن کاملPatterns of ecological specialization among microbial populations in the Red Sea and diverse oligotrophic marine environments
Large swaths of the nutrient-poor surface ocean are dominated numerically by cyanobacteria (Prochlorococcus), cyanobacterial viruses (cyanophage), and alphaproteobacteria (SAR11). How these groups thrive in the diverse physicochemical environments of different oceanic regions remains poorly understood. Comparative metagenomics can reveal adaptive responses linked to ecosystem-specific selective...
متن کاملSeasonal Expression of the Picocyanobacterial Phosphonate Transporter Gene phnD in the Sargasso Sea
In phosphorus-limited marine environments, picocyanobacteria (Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus spp.) can hydrolyze naturally occurring phosphonates as a P source. Utilization of 2-aminoethylphosphonate (2-AEP) is dependent on expression of the phn genes, encoding functions required for uptake, and C-P bond cleavage. Prior work has indicated that expression of picocyanobacterial phnD, encoding ...

The light effect on photoheterotrophic processes in Prochlorococcus, and primary and bacterial productivity in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre was investigated using (14)C-bicarbonate and (3)H-leucine. Light and dark incubation experiments were conducted in situ throughout the euphotic zone (0-175 m) on nine expeditions to Station ALOHA over a 3-year period. Photosynthetrons wer...
